CHAMPION OF WOMEN’S HEALTH
Dr. Garry Krepart Selected as WinnipegREALTORS® Citizens Hall of Fame 2018 Inductee
Cliff King, chair of WinnipegREALTORS® Citizens Hall of Fame program, announced the selection of Dr. Garry Krepart as this year’s inductee.
Krepart, a posthumous selection, is the 45th inductee since the program’s inception in 1986. He joins many previous inductees who have distinguished and notable accomplishments within the professional field of endeavor.
Dr. Krepart is known worldwide for making significant gynecologic oncology contributions to raising the standard of care to the highest level when it comes to treating women with gynecological cancer. He was an outstanding physician, teacher, mentor, researcher and administrator whose name in this specialized field of medicine became synonymous with excellence.
“What strikes you when you read the nomination submission on Dr. Krepart, is how through his area of expertise and specialized knowledge, he impacted people’s lives in the most profound and life-altering way,” said King. “Dr. Krepart literally saved lives and the life-saving cancer surgery he pioneered was accessible to thousands of women in Manitoba and beyond.”
To appreciate the enormity of what he did to change the outcome of women’s health in Manitoba when he returned to take up his specialty in Manitoba, it is worthwhile hearing from one of his early residents in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Dr. Christopher Harman.
“He shone a light of hope where there had been none, advanced the roles of chemotherapy, complex surgery and combined therapy for women previously regarded as terminal, and with his enhanced understanding of their medical and personal issues, was able to bring calm and compassion to a discipline previously marked by desperation. I am not overstating his impact on the care of Manitoba women with cancer – it was revolutionary.”
“Another admirable trait of Dr. Krepart which Winnipeggers would have appreciated was his modest demeanor in not needing the limelight to shine a light on what he did,” said King. “His primary focus was on his patients, not himself. And his drive to help women survive ovarian cancer made him a pioneer in his chosen field and a role model for so many to look up to.”
It is one thing to be really good at what you do but another to share your knowledge and expertise so others can pass it on and help others. This is exactly what Dr. Krepart did to build far greater reach in his field of endeavor. He became a go to resource on the global stage.
Some highlights of his body of work and acknowledgement of it include:
King concluded, “Dr. Garry Krepart was a consummate professional whose work went well beyond peer recognition to save and improve the lives of women. “He is a career pioneer that will inspire others to do the same.”
And based on the incredibly impressive long list of doctors and Winnipeggers who put their name down as enthusiastic supporters of Krepart’s nomination to WinnipegREALTORS® Citizens Hall of Fame, you see why Winnipeggers are so fortunate to have had this gynecologic oncologist make Winnipeg his home.
On Thursday, September 20th, 2018, Dr. Garry’s Krepart’s wife Lynn and son Russell will accept the Citizens Hall of Fame medallion award at an induction ceremony and reception held in his honour.
